Zambales Energy Island

Status:
Awarded service contract from the Philippine government. Currently in negotiation with the Philippine government for Renewable Energy Purchase Agreement (REPA), ongoing discussions with engineering, procurement and construction contractors and local sponsors.

Project background:
BPPC identified Zambales as a key strategic location for deployment of OTEC technologies due to the area’s world class OTEC energy climate combined with its close proximity to the country’s urban and industrial areas and existing infrastructure and manpower in accordance with the future requirements of the country’s ocean energy industry. The Zambales Energy Island is an OTEC pilot plant located within 10 km off the west coast of Luzon around 120 km north of Manila. The project will connect to the main transmission grid in Botolan and is not dependent on transmission upgrades. It is expected to offset approximately 84,121 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide a year and represents an investment of $180m.

The experience gained from the pilot plant will play a vital role in BPPC’s plans to expand to two further sites. Each site could potentially produce 600 MW.

Quezon Wave Farm

Resource assessment and project feasibility study.

Project background:
BPPC is proposing to develop the Lilypad wave energy converter prototype to suit the electricity needs of small and remote islands with no access to the main transmission grid. The deployment site is located on the eastern side of Luzon, Philippines.

Lilypad is designed to be one of the most affordable wave energy devices in the world. The project will supply Small Power Utilities Group with electricity that is cleaner and more affordable than those currently generated from diesel power plants.

Pangasinan Energy Island Plant

Project background:
North of Zambales, Pangasinan Energy Island Plant lies within 5 km off the west coast of Luzon. Contingent upon the successful performance of the pilot plant in Zambales, the project will scale up to 50 – 100 MW in Pangasinan with the option to produce desalinated water as co-product using Open Cycle configuration.

Davao Energy Island Plant

Project background:
Located in southern Philippines, the project will deliver electricity to the urban areas of Southern Mindanao and contingent upon the successful performance of the pilot plant in Zambales, the project will scale up to 50 – 100 MW to produce desalinated water as co-product using Open Cycle configuration.
